The Way of Christ and His Apostles

A summary of understanding

There is a Teaching

Therefore, being a follower of Jesus is much more than going to church and trying to be a good person "like Jesus". It involves:

  • •Embracing the the Good News, The Gospel, The Kerygma
  • •Being baptized to join into a church community
  • •Becoming established in His teaching (The Didache)
  • •Fully living this teaching out in community and lives

Following Jesus Means Following His Teaching, All of His Teaching

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

Matthew

28:19-20

Jesus specifically entrusted His Apostles to carry on His teachings

"Who are you, Lord?" Saul asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," he replied. "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do".

Acts

9:5-6

Luke records in Acts all that Jesus continued to do and teach through His Apostles

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen....He (Jesus) said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts

1:1-8

Ignoring the New Testament teaching of Jesus and His Apostles is to not fully follow Jesus Christ.

God's Plan Is His Church

God’s plan is/was for the Church to put His wisdom on display, and Paul had a particular role in making that plan clear to everyone.

...to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things. His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ephesians

3:9-11

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Ephesians

4:11-13

We must live this out as His followers in our churches

This is the work of ministry to put His wisdom on display and bring Him glory.

We do this in response to what God has done for us, and by the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to live according to God's design.

This is how we do so

Reshaping our individual lives and character

We intentionally leave behind our worldly nature and vices and build our lives and character to be inline with the mind of Christ and adorning the Gospel. We strive to live lives demonstrating good virtues (love, joy, peace, patience, compassion, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility, gentleness, and self-control)

(Romans 12:1-2, Galatians 5:16-21+24, 2 Timothy 3:1-17, Galatians 5:22-23, Ephesians 4:22-24, Ephesians 5:15-21, Colossians 2:6-8, 2 Peter 1:3–11, Philippians 1:27–2:18)

Structuring our families and households to be inline with God's design and intent

We manage our families in accordance with Christ's teaching so that strong marriages and families are in stark contrast to the surrounding world.

(Ephesians 5:22-6:9, Ephesians 6:1-4, Colossians 3:20-21, 1 timothy 3:4-5, 1 Peter 3:1-7)

Women Play a Crucial Role

  • - Key to stability of households, the building blocks of the Church
  • - Using households as centers for good works & hospitality
  • - Critical in training up younger generation
  • - Plenty of biblical examples of women in leading roles

Authentic caring church communities

We believe our churches are an extended family, complete with authority structures in accordance with Christ's teaching, to build up the community. We are committed to building one another up in unity of the faith.

(Titus 2:1-15, 1 Corinthians 13:1–8, Titus 2, Titus 3:9-11, Romans 14:1-23, 1 timothy 3:4-5, 1 Timothy 5:1-16, 2 thessalonians 3:6-15, Romans 12:3–16)

Simple authentic gatherings are key to spontaneous expansion

  • - Familial atmosphere
  • - Crosses social boundaries
  • - Everyone participating/contributing
  • - Teaching through dialogue
  • - Structure/order/leadership (with flexibility)
  • - Songs/music
  • - Meeting regularly

Shepherding & Counseling

  • - This is part of establishment of all believers
  • - Churches need to take the lead in this rather than only outsourcing to professionals
  • - Conversion is key to successful counseling

Conversion
Establishing Process
Productive Member of Community

Proper conduct towards our neighbors and the world

We aim to represent God well in our communities by respecting government authorities and loving and helping our neighbors

(Galatians 6:10, 1 Timothy 2:1-2, 1 Timothy 6:18, 2 Timothy 2:21, Titus 2:3-5, Titus 3:1-2, Ephesians 6:5-9, Romans 13:1-7, 1 Peter 3:8-17, Colossians 4:2-6)

Kerygmatic Communities

  • - Live out our new lives in Christ
  • - Evangelism should be integrated into the fabric of who we are
  • - Our lives should proclaim God's love & wisdom to those around us

Full participation in progressing the Gospel

We are all active participants in the work of ministry within the church body. We live responsible lives, not wasting our time here on earth.

(Ephesians 3:8-11, Colossians 4:2-6, 1 Peter 3:8-17, Acts 10:1-3, Acts 13-14, 2 corinthians 9:6-9, 1 corinthians 9:24-27, 1 Timothy 6:17–19, Romans 12:3–16, Philippians 3:1–21)

Funding Expansion

We must flip over the Western business model of funding evangelism through para-church organizations and return to the churches directly taking the lead in funding and carrying out evangelism and kingdom expansion.

Education & Training

The ability to learn and master scripture is open to all. Mastery is the natural flow of establishment that all believers should be working towards.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is with us to instruct, shape, and empower us to progress the Gospel as we diligently follow the teaching. The Spirit's power is fully realized in community. We do the work of renewing our minds so that we can be transformed by the Spirit.
